In November, 2001, I broke the habit of a lifetime and got myself involved with politics.  Hitherto I had succeeded in avoiding choosing sides and pretending that such things were an irrelevance, anyway.

My complacency was jolted by the arrogant and self-serving behaviour of my local authority, Haringey Council, which has been dominated by the Labour Party for over thirty years.  In that time it has become sure of itself, complacent and bloated with the corruptions of scale and power.

I joined the Conservative party in order to fight at the local elections.  The Conservatives did not win but as I found out more about the political process I developed an interest in it which has remained with me.

I went to the Conservative Party conference in Bournemouth in October, 2002 and delivered a speech on an area of great interest to me, children's broadcasting.  I expected the subject to get a polite and possibly co-operative reception but was not prepared for the storm of applause which greeted my observations on the state of programming for children's television and the necessity for a non-commercial children's radio service.
